We’ve all encountered rudeness in the workplace. Sometimes it’s subtle, sometimes it’s loud and obnoxious. However I’ve found most of the advice for dealing with rude people at work is one-note or focused on bullying and intimidation. What about those situations that don’t cross the line into bullying, but make your work life less enjoyable and your workplace less pleasant?
Dear Manners@Work, I joined a new workplace about six months ago and they have a lot of social events and most people tend to drink quite a bit. There is a conference coming up soon, which is three days at a hotel where the whole team is staying. There will be functions each evening. My question is—how much is it OK to drink at these kinds of things?
Dear Manners@Work, There’s a woman who works in the same pod as me. Every Monday morning, I say hello and I ask her how her weekend was. (Because that’s polite and friendly, right?). And every Monday morning, she replies and gives me a detailed answer about what she got up to. But she never, ever asks me about my weekend in return.
